The science of steam: why heat beats chemicals

Steam cleaning is not magic — it is physics. Heat, dwell time and dry vapour do what detergents cannot, and leave nothing behind to attract dirt back.

Most cleaning relies on chemistry: a detergent breaks the bond between dirt and a surface, then you rinse it away. Steam relies on physics instead. High-temperature water vapour transfers heat into the fibre or grout line, loosening grease, dissolving build-up and killing bacteria, dust mites and mould on contact — then it evaporates, leaving almost no moisture behind.

Two numbers decide the result: temperature and dwell time. Hot enough steam sanitises; long enough contact lifts the soil out rather than just smearing it. Get both right and you clean far deeper than a surface wipe. Get them wrong and you have wet a surface for nothing. That is the real skill behind our sofa and upholstery cleaning — matching the temperature and pass speed to each fabric.

The quiet advantage of steam is what it does not leave behind. Shampoos and sprays leave a sticky residue that attracts dirt faster than before, which is why a shampooed sofa often looks grubby again within weeks. With no soap in the process, there is nothing left in the fibre to re-attract dirt — so the clean lasts.

Dry vapour also means very little water. Our upholstery and mattress work is typically touch-dry in 1–2 hours, not the day-long soak you get from wet extraction alone. That matters for busy homes and for rentals turning around between guests, where a bed or sofa cannot be out of action for long.
