The invisible tenants in your mattress — and what they do to you
Dust mites, their droppings and years of sweat build up where you sleep. Here is what that actually does to your health, and how hot steam evicts them.
You share your bed with a population you never see. A used mattress can host tens of thousands of dust mites — microscopic arachnids that feed on the dead skin cells you shed every night. They are not dirty in the sense of visible grime; they thrive even in tidy, well-kept homes. The problem is not the mites themselves but what they leave behind.
Mite droppings and body fragments contain proteins that are among the most common indoor allergy triggers in the world. Breathe them in night after night and they can drive the runny nose, itchy eyes, blocked airways, eczema flare-ups and disrupted sleep that many people simply put down to “bad allergies” or a stuffy room. For children, asthmatics and anyone with sensitive skin, the mattress is often the single biggest reservoir of allergens in the house.
Vacuuming barely touches them. Mites and their waste sit below the surface, woven into the padding, and no amount of airing or surface cleaning reaches that layer. Chemical sprays add their own residue without solving the root problem. This is exactly where hot dry-steam earns its place: our mattress steam-cleaning runs above 100°C, which kills mites on contact and denatures the allergen proteins they leave behind — no chemicals, and the mattress is dry again in 1–2 hours.
On the Costa del Sol there is an extra factor: heat and humidity. Warm, damp coastal air is ideal for mites and for the mould that feeds the same allergy cycle, which is why we recommend a deep clean at least once a year for homes and far more often for holiday rentals and hotels where beds turn over constantly.
